INVITATION BUYING TIPS

How Many To Order

Perhaps the most frequent and costly mistake wedding invitation buyers make is to buy too many or too few invitations.  Your guest list is where you start to calculate how many invitations you will need.  However, the number of guests and the number of invitations are not the same.  Each invitation can go to one or more guests.  The average is two people to an invitation.  The other expensive mistake is to buy too few.  Going back to order more after the order has been placed is usually 5 times more expensive than it would have been in the beginning because it is calculated as being a new order.  And when you order – don’t forget to leave an extra 10 to 15 in your count just in case you have forgotten someone. It also is not a bad idea to order an extra 25 envelopes in case you make some addressing mistakes.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Place Your Order

Did you know that the Fall is the most cost effective time of the year to buy invitations?  Just like a new car model year, the invitation business begins its new year in September.  The invitation books generally start changing their styles in September and continue thru February.  New styles come in and old styles go out.  But it is also the time of year when the prices change.  The same invitation bought in October could be more expensive in November.  This is a very important thing for those Spring brides. Shop early and you might pay less.

How Much Time Does the Order Process Take

Leave enough time for your order which should include a typesetter’s proof.  Invitation orders may be delivered from one day to six weeks.  It all depends upon the supplier, the invitation, and the shipping method.  Remember, after you receive your order, you still need to assemble, address, and mail them at least 6-8 weeks before the wedding day.  Plan ahead.  Consider ordering 4-6 months before your wedding.   This should leave ample time in case there are any unforeseen problems.  Also, it is always a good idea to order a typesetter’s proof.  It gives you a “last chance” to see your invitation typeset exactly as it will look before it is printed.   Many costly mistakes can be prevented by requesting a proof.
